Ireland claimed the FVPA Home Nations Super Sunday trophy last week and with that their first international honour after a 2-1 victory over England in the final.
Leading up to the tournament Ireland were widely highlighted as the team to beat with the addition of some very good players added to the group of players who were beaten by Belgium in the semi finals of their previous tournament endeavour.
Manager James Ryan had built on a successful run of friendly performances and arguably had his strongest team to call on. Irelands first game was against Northern Ireland who are still new to the international circuit and after a good start Ireland were 2-0 up and held on during the second half. Northern Ireland played well and can only get better over time as they play more together. Englands first game was against plucky Wales who played out a 1-1 draw with the finalists. England and Ireland both played Scotland who managed a 1-1 draw with Ireland while losing 2-1 to England.
Against Ireland Unity Legend scored one of the few goals past Irish keeper I Phoenix I who largely had a great tournament. England then went on to beat Northern Ireland 1-0 with Assletico Pants Striker Zac getting the only goal of the game. Ireland went on to beat Wales 2-0 with scorers Malky and Yapa linking up well and setting up each others goals.
The last group game was to be the prelude to the final with both Ireland and England already guaranteed places in the final. The match was a very closely contested affair with very few chances for both teams. In the end Ireland ran out 1-0 winners with a neatly taken goal from Storybud22. The final saw a repeat of the previous game but it was Ireland who started the brighter with two very early goals with Sweeney scoring a goal from a well worked set piece and Yapa getting the second.
Throughout the match England probed for a goal and get their reward when a save by I Phoenix I rebounded and fell into the path of Unity Clancy who sliced the ball home. Ireland battled to keep England at bay and on 87min a lofted ball towards the back stick was met by Zac who was thwarted by I Phoenix I who pulled off a wonderful save to keep England out. The game ended 2-1 to Ireland and saw them beat their rivals in a well contested affair.
